Engineering Design Assignment

Assignment: Formulation of possible technical solutions to address the student- prepared design specification.

HNC in Electrical, Electronic and Mechanical Engineering.

Assignment - Formulation of possible technical solutions to address the student-prepared design specification.

Assignment Brief: Scenario:

You work as a junior engineer for a large chemical plant manufacturing Titanium Di-Oxide. In the various processes within the factory, the company uses a varied amount of rotating equipment. When equipment fails it is removed, decontaminated and then delivered to a small workshop on site, where a small team of maintenance personnel refurbish and test the equipment before it is returned to the companys store. The majority of the work is refurbishing a range of centrifugal pumps including brands such as KSB, Flowserve, ITT and Sulzer. At present the pumps are delivered to the workshop by forklift truck and then transfeered to a basic workbench via a portable lifting device.

The pump is then overhauled and re-built and then transfeered to another bench where a simple static pressure test is performed before the pump is returned to service or the stores.

The works engineer has observed this operation and would like it to be safer and more efficient. The following observations were made -:
• Unsafe rigging/slinging of equipment
• Some maintenance personnel struggling to comfortably work on equipment
• Time wasted looking for tools
• Time wasted waiting for lifting device and transfeering to testing bench
• Largest size of equipment 1000mm x 600mm x 600mm

The works engineer has asked you to design a work station/bench solution to increase safety and effeciency of the refurbishment and testing of rotating equipment.

Task : Formulating possible technical solutions

Having completed your design specification, you have been asked to present a suggested design solution, based upon your design specification from assignment 1. You should explore industry standard evaluation and analytical methods in generating possible solutions, these should be produced using various design techniques. Your presentation should include an evaluation of at least three different solutions and make the case for your proposed final choice.

To complete this part, the following elements should also be undertaken:
• The use of software to develop ideas by; modeling/simulation/prototyping different solutions based on annotated sketches/models/drawings
• The use of industry standard evaluation techniques, such as cause and effect diagrams, forced decision making or a Pugh matrix, to make a final choice for a solution.

A decision matrix is a choice making tool that examines and ranks a list of possibilities. It is used to make decisions. In order to assess each choice, the team first develops a list of weighted criteria, which it then compares to the list of criteria.

When to use a decision matrix:

• When a large number of possibilities must be limited down to a single option
• When a judgement must be made as a result of a number of different factors

• Following the reduction of a large number of alternatives to a manageable amount via the process of list reduction

The following are examples of typical situations:

• When just one development opportunity or issue must be chosen in order to be addressed
• Whenever just one solution or technique to problem-solving can be applied.
• Whenever there is just one new product that can be created.
