Analyze
Read the scenario and analyze how the organization can incorporate information systems planning to achieve its goals.
Imagine you were just hired by an aluminum can manufacturing plant to manage its database and information system. You have a degree in information systems with a specialty in aligning business and technological planning. Currently, the aluminum can plant's information technology extends to two aspects:
-A product materials database: a real-time, database inventory of manufacturing materials and resources
-Finished product tracking: records the number of finished products now ready for shippingYour new manager tells you that the main business plans for the coming year are to increase the quality of the product, reduce defective parts, and streamline the manufacturing process. Your manager wants to know what types of technologies are available to help the company achieve these goals.
Answer the following questions to help you formulate an adequate response:
1) Currently, the company's database applications extend to tracking materials before the manufacturing process and to tracking items - in real time - produced after the process. Where can you add technology to their operations?
2) Why would this technology be valuable to the company? What type of common information system would this be?
3) What are the first things you need to consider when proposing that new information systems be brought into your new company?
4) What is the strategic goal of the new information system you are proposing?
5) How will the goals of your information systems proposal help the company achieve one of its business goals? Use a different goal than what you used in question 3 of this Analysis section.
6) What is one risk of introducing your new information system? Why is it a risk?
Synthesize
Now that you have analyzed the technological needs of the manufacturing plant, it is time to begin proposing specific solutions to your manager. After several conversations, you know your manager is extremely concerned that defective parts are costing the company tens of thousands of dollars per year.
1) How exactly will your new system work?
2) How will the plant managers obtain this information? In order to properly answer this question, do some outside research on the topic of "technology dashboard."
a) First, what is a dashboard?
b) Would a dashboard be a good thing to implement at the plant?
3) What are the management information requirements for this new technology?
4) What are the difficulties and risks in designing an information system for this environment? Additionally, why should the company take these risks?
5) What makes this information systems environment unique?
