GOAL: Practice linking evidence and claims in your writing by using the 10 on 1 (Induction) strategy.

OUTCOMES: In completing this activity, you will learn how to:

• Select a number of examples and identify shared characteristics or patterns among these examples. 
• Formulate a general principle or working claim about your group of examples.
• Choose one key, representative example (the "1") and examine it in depth, offering various observations about it (the "10"). 
• Test your claim or conclusion by applying it to new examples or evidence.

DIRECTIONS: Use the prompts below to develop an inductive analysis. You can learn more about inductive reasoning, organizing papers using 10 on 1, and see examples of doing 10 on 1 in Chapters 6 and 7 of the eBook.

1. Looking for patterns among examples. Make a list of examples or pieces of evidence below. Use strategies such as The Method or Notice & Focus to find a pattern of similarities or a common tendency in these examples or pieces of evidence. Explain the pattern(s) that you see, stating this as a general principle or working claim about your group of examples.
2. Choosing one key example. Select one example from your list of examples in #1 and write it below. You want to choose your best, most representative example. Explain why you've chosen this example. What makes it a rich, representative example and worth exploring in depth?
3. Observations about the key example. Develop a list of as many observations as possible (the "10") about the one example (the "1") that you've selected.  What do you notice about it?  What else do you notice?  What might these details mean or imply?  What else might they mean? 
4. Restating your claim. Explain how your understanding of the working claim you started with (in question #1) has evolved as a result of your close analysis of a key example.  With inductive analysis, it is common for a writer to start with a general claim and conclude with a more specific conclusion or claim.  Provide your revised claim below.          
5. Testing your revised claim.  To help you think about the implications or applications of your revised claim, consider testing it by doing 10 on 1 analysis of another relevant, notable example.  List the example (the "1") below and once again, offer as many specific observations (the "10") about that example as you can, commenting on details and on what those details might mean or imply.
