Crucial moments in the novel, as much as these chapters introduce the novel's main characters as well as foreshadow the character relationships that will develop as the novel's story unfolds. As such, what did you notice about Miles's first impressions of Silas, Zenobia, Hollingsworth, and Priscilla? What opinions does he seem have about these characters? Which of these characters seemed interesting to you? How, in his recollections, does Miles' prejudices, proclivities, and personality traits become evident in the way he expresses his initial thoughts about these characters? Why, for instance, do you think he has such reservations about Hollingsworth, looks down upon Silas' rustic person, and seems intimidated by Zenobia's femininity? What does this say about Miles' character and potentially how the characters will later relate to one another.
