The Force Field Analysis Model
Though multiple models exist, the Force Field Analysis Model (Kurt Lewin, 1947), is one of the oldest models that may be used for conflict management. This model is used for developing an understanding of a conflict situation and its causes and to plan corrective action. It is an effective intervention with individuals and teams, and its premise is that the current state of the system is in ‘quasi' equilibrium surrounded by a field of opposing forces, and that the desired condition can only be achieved by dislodging the current balance and moving it to the desired state.
INCLUDE EACH OF THE FOLLOWING SEVEN STEPS AND A CONCLUDING PARAGRAPH:
Step 1: Force Field Analysis/Introduction -use the following bullet points as sub-headings, and state your information in complete sentences, with examples to clarify your information
• Identify and state the conflict situation you want to improve and carefully and completely describe the situation
• What is the status quo? In other words, what is the current condition? Why do you want it changed?
Step 2: Force Field Analysis - use the following bullet points as sub-headings, and state your information in complete sentences, with examples to clarify your information
• Carefully and completely describe the desired condition
• Where do you want to be? What is the desired state of things?
• Where would ‘fix' look like? Focus on the action in-between 'desired' state and 'current' state (refer to diagram)
Step 3: Force Field Analysis - use the following bullet points as sub-headings, and state your information in complete sentences, with examples to clarify your information
• Clearly identify the 'forces and factors' (e.g., those operating in the current force field)
• Clearly identify the ‘driving forces' (e.g., those pushing in the direction of the desired condition)
• Clearly identify the ‘restraining forces' (e.g., those pushing away from the desired condition)
• Be thorough and exhaustive, so that a picture of why things are as they are, comes clear to the reader
• Review this information for clarification and duplication, and refine wording as needed
Step 4: Force Field Analysis - use the following bullet points as sub-headings, and state your information in complete sentences (except bullet point 1), with examples to clarify your information
• Examine the forces; a list may be stated in point form
• Which forces are strong? Which are weak? Identify and state how strong or weak each item is. Then, rate each item on a 5 point Likert Scale, suing the following rating 1=a very weak force or argument, and 5=a very strong force or argument. Place your rating beside each force, and include a group tally at the bottom of this section, prior to moving to the next bullet point
• Consider and state which forces are susceptible to influence and which are not. What or who could the influences be? Which forces are under your control, and which are not? Which forces are make or break challenges?
Step 5: Force Field Analysis - use the following bullet points as sub-headings, and state your information in complete sentences, with examples to clarify your information
The strategies for moving the equilibrium include adding more driving forces, removing restraining forces, or both.
• With this, what driving forces could you add? What restraining forces could you remove? Clearly state your response with examples
• Note that adding more 'drivers' will likely cause resistance; what would this look like in your conflict situation? Answer Who (i.e., a person), or what (i.e., a relationship, home, or work environment), would this impact?
Step 6: Implement action plans
State in 4-5 sentences what your action plan would include. Use examples to help clarify your plan.
• Describe what specific actions must be taken to stabilize the equilibrium at the desired condition and state what results may be attained by implementing those actions. Include examples to clarify your response
Step 7: Determine effects and learning
What could be attained from using this Model to assist you with your conflict situation? What could be the greatest impact and/or outcome? Who would be affected by this?
Conclusion
Add a concluding paragraph (five-eight sentences), that summarizes this analysis. Summarize your paper and include what have you learned in this process.
