For this Assignment, you are required to write and submit a paper, using the Force Field Analysis for a conflict situation you are currently faced with, or a conflict situation that you have recently dealt with. To help organize the structure of this paper, students are to use and title each of the 8 Steps and a concluding paragraph as headings in the paper. Complete information and responses should be listed underneath each Step.
It is recommended that students use a personal conflict, as the communication of the 'parts' and the analysis thereof will be much easier than making up a conflict situation, or using a scenario outside of your experience. Conflict situations could be in the areas of family relations/concerns, employment/work environments, relationships, balancing school/work/family, etc. NOTE - for this assignment, conflict situations do not need to be traumatic; not getting along with a co-worker/roommate/partner or a family member, or trying to decide when to move/change positions, or how to work through challenging discussions/conversations all count as a conflict situation.
Ultimately, students are using the Force Field diagram to provide a reflective and concise model of their situation; therefore, it is imperative that you review the diagram, and work through how each of the 8 Steps are essential to this Model.
Ensure that this analysis includes all eight steps, and a concluding paragraph, as stated below. Students are expected to submit their own work and to proofread and edit their paper for correct grammar and sentence structure. Turnitin software is used for all submissions.
The intention of this activity/analysis is to provide you with an opportunity to work through self-challenging and creating agendas. This model may be applied to client situations and used as a framework to work through a challenging process with clients who are wanting to create action plans and agendas for change.
Requirements
• Length: submissions should be no less than 5 pages and no more than 7 pages in length, excluding the title and reference pages. See the APA Student Guide for title page template and reference page information and formatting
• APA Format (APA Student Guide (Links to an external site.))
• All submissions to your instructor are kept confidential. Submit this assignment to the assignment drop box by the due date; check Canvas.
The Force Field Analysis Model
The Force Field Analysis Model (Kurt Lewin, 1947) is the oldest and most practiced intervention for conflict management. It is used for developing an understanding of a conflict situation and its causes and to plan corrective action. It is an effective intervention with individuals and teams and its premise is that the current state of the system is in ‘quasi' equilibrium surrounded by a field of opposing forces and that the desired condition can only be achieved by dislodging the current balance and moving it to the desired state.
INCLUDE EACH OF THE FOLLOWING EIGHT STEPS AND A CONCLUDING PARAGRAPH:
Step 1: Force Field Analysis/Introduction -use the following bullet points as sub-headings, state your information in complete sentences, with examples to clarify your information
• Identify and state the conflict situation you want to improve and carefully and completely describe the situation.
• What is the status quo? What is the current condition? Why do you want it changed?
Step 2: Force Field Analysis - use the following bullet points as sub-headings, state your information in complete sentences, with examples to clarify your information
• Carefully and completely describe the desired condition.
• Where do you want to be? What is the desired state of things?
• Where would ‘fix' look like? Focus on the action in-between 'desired' state and 'current' state.
Step 3: Force Field Analysis - use the following bullet points as sub-headings, state your information in complete sentences, with examples to clarify your information
• Clearly identify the forces and factors operating in the current force field
• Clearly identify the ‘driving forces' pushing in the direction of the desired condition
• Clearly identify the ‘restraining forces' pushing away from the desired condition
• Be thorough and exhaustive, so that a picture of why things are as they are comes clear to the reader
• Review this information for clarification and duplication, and refine wording as needed.
Step 4: Force Field Analysis - use the following bullet points as sub-headings, state your information in complete sentences (except bullet point 1), with examples to clarify your information
• Examine the forces; a list may be stated in point form
• Which forces are strong? Which are weak? Identify and state how strong or weak each item is. Then, rate each item on a 5 point Likert Scale 1=a very weak force or argument and 5= a very strong force or argument. Place your rating beside each force, and include a group tally at the bottom of this section, prior to including the next point
• Consider and state which forces are susceptible to influence and which are not. What or who could the influences be? Which forces are under your control, and which are not? Which forces are make or break challenges?
Step 5: Force Field Analysis - use the following bullet points as sub-headings, state your information in complete sentences, with examples to clarify your information
• The strategies for moving the equilibrium include adding more driving forces, removing restraining forces, or both. Clearly state your response with examples
• Note that adding more 'drivers' will likely cause resistance; what would this look like in your scenario? Who or what would this impact?
• When proposing new drivers, create action plans for their implementation.
Step 6: Implement action plans
State in 4-5 sentences what your action plan would include. Use examples if they help to clarify your plan.
Step 7: Describe what specific actions must be taken to stabilize the equilibrium at the desired condition and state what results may be attained by implementing those actions. Include examples to clarify your response.
Step 8: Determine effects and learning
What could be attained from using this Model to assist you with your conflict situation? What could be the greatest impact and/or outcome? Who would be affected by this? What have you learned in this process?
Conclusion
Add a concluding paragraph (five-eight sentences), that summarizes this analysis.
