Social Justice & Jesuit Values

Focusing on a social justice issue, a Jesuit Value (of your choice), and an approach to Leadership (see this week's reading on leadership).

  1. First, in your opening paragraph provide a brief overview of the social justice issue on which you are focusing. What would it mean to provide leadership in this area by advocating a solution (i.e., by persuading an audience)? Frame the issue and your solution to the issue in the form of a moral claim (this is your thesis statement). When you are making your moral claim, include one of the ethical theories we read about last week. Your introduction should be concise and dedicated to giving the reader just enough information to convey the issue as framed by your moral claim. Demonstrate your ability to provide leadership on this issue by defending a viable solution.
  2. In the body of your paper incorporate ethical theories (from Week 6) and political theories (from Week 7) to support your position. Explain how your chosen ethical theories can help us find practical solutions. As you move further into the body of your paper, give as many specific details and examples as you can in support of your position. Be sure to demonstrate how your solutions are focused on care for others.
  3. Now present a counterargument in which you anticipate and respond to criticisms of your position. You can choose an opposing ethical theory if you wish. Make your counterargument as strong as possible. Cultivate the habit of intellectual generosity by taking the opposing side seriously and in good faith. Assume your intellectual opponents are intelligent and well-intentioned.
  4. Next state your chosen Jesuit Value and say how it informs and supports your position. What values of leadership and care for others does your Jesuit Value exemplify? Indicate how this Value sheds unique light on the social justice issue at hand. Do you see any relationship between the Jesuit Value you have chosen and the ethical theory you've been exploring? If so, say how.
  5. Lastly, frame the solution to your social justice issue in terms of Leadership. What does leadership look like as it pertains to your issue? How does a leader embody "care for others" within the context of the solution you are defending?
  6. Now craft a brief conclusion in which you recount your social justice issue, the solution you proposed, the Jesuit Value you explored, and your vision of Leadership. You've already made your case; your conclusion simply closes the circle.
