Embraer is one of the largest aircraft manufacturers in the world. It focuses on specific market segments in commerical, where it produces mid-size aircraft, defence and executive aviation. IN these semgnets, its arch rival is Bombardier. Like its global competitors, it operates with a large amount of physical capital and invests heavily in R&D, with a large percentage of trained and highly skilled professionals, including a high percentage of univeristy graduates. Most benefit from a profit sharing scheme. It is a major user of aluminium and other metals/materials. It is based in Brazil where it ranks high on the list of exporting companies.

(a) Assess the type 1 and type 2 vulnerability of this company, especially its short run cost function.

(b) Assess its exposure to competitive forces in the market for aircraft. Has it been in the ‘strategic hell’ of perfect competition between 2003 and 2007? Here you should consider its macroeconomic exposure (e.g. to the business cycle, interest rates, exchange rates) and its market exposure (the market structure, its costs, its product and competitors).
