Explain the following The environmental health factor I chose to focus on is air pollution because according to the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, air pollution is responsible for 6.5 million deaths yearly (National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, 2024). Inhalation of pollutants can directly lead to respiratory issues, cancer, and cardiovascular disease. People can also experience chronic stress and economic strain because the areas they live in typically have inadequate housing, limited access to healthcare, and increased healthcare costs due to health issues related to pollutants. Populations that are more vulnerable to negative impacts of environmental factors are children, elderly, low-income populations, and people with pre-existing health issues. Children are more susceptible to problems due to their still-developing respiratory systems. The elderly are at increased risk because of their pre-existing health conditions such as heart disease and COPD. Low-income populations are affected by living in areas closer to pollution sources, such as factories or high-traffic areas. Lastly, people who have pre-existing health conditions like chronic respiratory diseases, autoimmune disorders, or weakened immune systems are at increased risk for problems because their issues could be worsened because of the pollutants.
