Critical appraisal
Write a 2-page critique that begins with a statement of the research aim(s) with the main independent variables and outcome variable(s) and target population clearly noted whilst you cite the article using APA7th referencing style. Your critique will focus on evaluating the overall methods:
(i) study design
(ii) data collection and data analyses, biases and limitations) against the research aim(s) and the overall quality (or ‘usability') of the findings as you
(iii) justify how you may use the reported findings as a consumer of research products and how you may put forward recommendations to the research community in addressing the relevant Sustainable Development Goal.
Guide
• Each part of your critique must be typed in Calibri font, size 11, 1.5 spacing (with 0 pt spacing before and after) on a normal margin (2.54cm from the top, left, right and bottom) and must not exceed 2 pages. The reference list may be presented in a smaller font of at least Calibri size 9 with single spacing within the 2-page limit.
• Write your critical evaluation in a succinct manner. For example, you may start off by stating the research aim, e.g. "Authors A, B, C, etc. aimed to ..... (Note: your in-text citation of the research article you are evaluating goes here. You may use the APA 7th referencing guide)."
• After that, if you are referring to the same research article, you may just say "The article... . " and it will be understood that it refers to the research article you just cited and you do not have to cite it again.
• You may add details as you evaluate, for example, the sampling technique: E.g. "Author A et al. (or Author A, B, C, D, et al., depending on your article) used a X sampling technique (pp.2-3 or p.145, depending on your article) Note: you do not have to repeat the whole paragraph (or section because this may be plagiarism), which is an (in)appropriate method because of issues related to XYZ (reference)."
• The reference here can be any reputable resources that supported reason XYZ, or even the research article if the authors justified their method in the article you read, or a relevant textbook because they tend to cover the key concepts so you do not need multiple different sources.
Citation and reference list
• Refer to the example above for in-text citation.
• It is always a good practice to cite (and acknowledge) the person who created that knowledge (not necessary the teaching staff) as the person allows you to apply that knowledge. We do not want to act barbaric and steal people's knowledge (this would be academic misconduct!). In saying that, the applied knowledge is your own so you do not have to cite (or acknowledge) yourself. For example, if you are Sam Brown, you do not have to write the sentence "The research team used a X sampling technique (pp. 2-3) and because of XYZ (REF), they could have used technique Z (Brown 2022)." and cite yourself because the applied knowledge is yours.
• Everything you cited in your evaluation MUST be listed on the reference list.
