You have recently taken a position as a Junior Human Resources Consultant for an organization, YOT Automotive Parts Inc. The organization is located in Strathroy, Ontario. It is a non-unionized employer with approximately 250 employees. Your new role requires that you provide assistance to managers in their daily interactions and management decisions. Although the organization has a strong workforce, there are many new managers who require assistance. You are very concerned about establishing positive relationships with your colleagues. The HR Manager has asked you to review the following issues and provide advice.

Caitlin has worked for YOT Automotive Parts for the last five years. When she began working at the organization, she signed a fixed contract for one year to work in as an Entry Level Automotive Production position. You understand that this was frequently the practice. The employer was reluctant to commit to full-time employment obligations. You have reviewed the employment file/record personnel records and is unable to locate any additional contracts. Caitlin's manager informed you that he is not aware if Caitlin ever signed a subsequent contract since starting her employment.

Mina has worked for the organization for three years. Recently, there were some changes in the organization's operations. As a result, the employer no longer needs Mina to conduct his current role. Instead, his manager has suggested that there will be another opening that may interest Mina. However, the role would not include the same terms and conditions of employment; specifically, the compensation package would not include the automotive allowance and the compensation would be $7,000 less per year.

Chris has worked for the YOT Automotive Parts for 7 months. The manager would like to change Chris's duties to include working at the nearby facility in London. The London facility is also non-unionized. His contract does not contain any information related to the location. However, Chris's offer letter indicated that the work would be performed exclusively in London.

Assignment Instructions:

The following requires that students adopt four of the five steps of Woods Plan, i) define the problem, ii) think about it, iii) plan a solution, and iv) carry it out (provide advice to HR Manager).

1. Identify any potential legal issues in the scenario related to i) Caitlin, ii) Mina, and iii) Chris.

2. What advice would you provide the HR Manager related to the three employees?

3. Explain how you used the four steps in Woods' Plan to solve the complex problem.
