The media has become a very powerful force in American politics. With that said, explain if you think the First Amendment's guarantee of freedom of the press places a special obligation on the media to behave responsibly and if you think there is a need for checks on the power of the media. Consider the influence the media has on public opinion and as a watchdog over government.

Press freedom means that the news media can be independent of the government and cannot be censored. It can apply to all news media, including TV, radio, and the web. etc. another term often used is prior restraint, which means attempting to prevent ideas from being expressed before they are published, which is in violation of the government's right to control the press. Among the other nations in the world, we are privileged to have the freest press, most of them are not. 'The Fourth Estate' - this unofficial branch of government that monitors the official three branches and serves as the watchdog of a free society - appears to have a special right in the First Amendment.
