1.) At current output a profit maximizing competitive firm gets $8 per unit produced and has average total costs of $12. When the market price is $8, the firm's marginal cost curve crosses its marginal revenue curve where Q=120 units.
a. Draw two graphs side-by-side: On the left side, sketch a representation of the market equilibrium (i.e. supply, demand, market equilibrium quantity and market equilibrium price). On the right side, sketch a representation of the individual competitive firm's cost curves (I haven't provided much information about the actual shape, but draw something consistent with the given data). Make sure the market equilibrium price determined in your leftmost graph appears in your rightmost graph: Each individual firm takes the market price as given!
b. What is the firm's current level of profit? Do you anticipate entry or exit into the market? Explain your reasoning.
2.) Suppose a competitive firm previously set its price at $15 per unit to maximize its profit, which had been positive. Then the market price falls to $12 and the firm adjusts in order to maximize its profits at the decreased price. After these adjustments what can we conclude about the firm's quantity of output, average total cost, and marginal revenue in terms of being higher, lower, or the same as before?
Do you agree with the writers' conclusions? How could the media contribute to an economic downturn? How can media consumers be sure that they are getting accurate information before making investment decisions?
How have they done in the past? What is their current state? What kinds of plans and possibilities do they have for the future? Is there room for improving what they do?
Compute the price elasticity of demand for subway rides. If the transit authority reduces the fare back to 50 cents, what impact would you expect on the ridership. Why
Calculate the marginal rate of substitution between goods X and Y for Consumer A at the current allocation. Calculate the marginal rate of substitution between goods X and Y for Consumer B at the current allocation
choose and research an industry where there has been a pattern of change in a particular market model monopoly
OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Act) regulations reduce health risks associated with the workplace, but actually make workers worseoff by limiting opportunities for workers to accept compensating wage differentials.
1.Under what circumstances might a tax reduction be associated with a long-run increases in real national income and a long-run reduction in the price level.
suppose three identical firms are engaged in cournot competition in quantities. they all have marginal costs 40.
If the goal of the transit authority was to maximize total revenues, what is the new price it should set? Also, what would the total revenue raised in this new price scheme?
Lilly is the price-taking owner of an apple orchard; its variable costs are given in the table. Her orchard has fixed costs of $30. If the price of a bushel of apples is $80, how many bushels will Lilly produce? Is this a long-run equilibrium?..
Think about a noncompetitive market in which you participate regularly. Explain which characteristic(s) of competitive markets your market does not meet.
Suppose Suzuki increases the price of a particular motorcycle model by 12 percent and as a result the quantity demanded for that model decreases by 4 percent. Calculate the price elasticity of demand for that motorcycle model.
