Abstract:

The main idea of this lab is to decompose hydrogen peroxide by using KI. Moreover, determine the volume of oxygen gas by using the decomposition reaction. Therefore, after found the volume of oxygen gas, the temperature and the pressure of water from the manual, we found the number of moles by using the ideal gas law. The number of moles for all trials were 1.72*10^-3, 2.6*10^-3 and 2.5*10^-3 moles receptively. The percent mass were 11.7%, 17.6% and 17% receptively.

Introduction:

In this experiment, we used decomposition of hydrogen peroxide to form the oxygen gas. Therefore, the Dalton`s law of partial pressure was used and that helped the reaction to become faster. In the first moment of the reaction, the process of reaction occurs slowly, but after added KI, the reaction become faster and the volume of the water inside the graduated cylinder has been changed. After the oxygen gas formed in the Erlenmeyer flask, we measure the volume of the gas inside the cylinder.

Discussion:

The decomposition hydrogen peroxide experiment was completed very well because it was easy to follow the procedure from the manual. In addition, the procedure was same for all trails and that make it more easer to follow. The source of error may happen because there is some difficult step during set up the equipment, which removed the parafilm and carefully place, the end of the tubing just inside the graduated cylinder. This step was the most difficult part in the experiment and that will allow for error to happen. Another source of error may affect our data was did not give the reaction the enough time to be completed in the first trial.
