A fire truck draws water from an open constant-level reservoir through a hose of 0.2 ft2 cross section. The water is discharged from the pump through another 0.2 ft2 hose to a surge tank pressurized to 120 psig with air at the top. The pump adds 970 ft lbf/slug of energy to the fluid. The water level in the surge tank is 3 ft above the pump centerline. From the surge tank the water flows steadily through a hose of 0.04 ft2 area to a nozzle of 0.01 ft2 area. The nozzle exit is held at the same level as the water free surface in the surge tank. Neglect all frictional losses and sketch the system.

Find the:

a) speed of the water leaving the nozzle

b) elevation of the pump relative to the reservoir

c) power required to drive the pump if it has an 80 % efficiency

d) maximum height above the reservoir that the stream of water exiting the nozzle can reach.
