Suppose that we align a compass needle with the horizontal component of the Earth's magnetic field and then switch on a second field 10mT in size in a direction we know to be at 90° to the Earth's field. We see the compass needle swing through 17°. What is the size of the horizontal component of the Earth's magnetic field?
