Why UPS does not program their software to find the shortest route available
When I think about linear programming for routes, I immediately think of logistics companies: UPS, FedEx, and Speedee (regional company).
Ironically, UPS had a policy where drivers didn't turn left (across traffic) to save stopping times, even if it means the shortest route is NOT taken.
The main reasons for doing this:
• lower chance of accidents
• makes for less delays/idleness
• economy of fuel (due to not having to floor it to make it through a gap in traffic)
(Kendall, 2017)
"As a result, the company claims it uses 10m gallons less fuel, emits 20,000 tonnes less carbon dioxide and delivers 350,000 more packages every year" (Kendall, 2017 p.1).
