A 25 ft. reinforced concrete beam is being designed to support a uniformly distributed load. This load has an average value of 1.4 kip/ft with a standard deviation of 0.3 kip/ft. The average flexural resistance of the beam is 230 ft-kip with a standard deviation of 15 ft-kip, and the average shear resistance of the beam is 45 kip with a standard deviation of 7 kip.
1) Find the global safety factor in both flexure and shear (note: safety factor = resistance/load effect)
2) Find the safety index in both flexure and shear
3) If the average flexural resistance is increased to 270 ft-kip with the same standard deviation of 15 ft-kip, find the new safety index in flexure
4) If the standard deviation of the shear resistance is decreased to 5 kip with the same shear resistance, find the new safety index in shear
5) Comment on your results
A temporary diversion has been constructed on a highway of +4 percent gradient due to major repairs that are being undertaken on a bridge. The maximum speed allowed on the diversion is 10 mph.
Lift Charts in direct marketing, The mass-mailing business is often used to illustrate the use of lift charts. Another real world application where the lift charts can be used
A two-liter bottle is one-third full of water and two-thirds full of air. The air in the bottle has a gage pressure of 340 kPa. the bottle is turned upside-down and the cap is released so that the water is rapidly forced out of the bottle
Design a one way slab to support a uniform live load of 300 psf. The beam is simply supported with a span of 20 ft. Use a reinforcement ration ( Ps) of 0.008 Use f'c=3000 psi and fy=60000 psi.
A one meter diameter cylindrical mass is connected to a 2 meter wide rectangular gate. the gate is to open when the water level drops below 2.5 meters. Determine the required value of the mass of the cylinder in kgs.
A mining engineer plans to do hydraulic mining with a high-speedjet of water. a lake is located H=300 m above the mine site Waterwill be delivered through L=900 m of hte fire house with an inside diameter D
estimate the concentration and the mass emission rate of NOx if a coal containing 1.5% nitrogen is combusted at 1400 k using an air/fuel ratio that is 1.5 times the stoichiometric ratio.
During a shrinkage limit test on a silty clay, the volume of the dry soil pat was found to be 11.02 cm3 and its dry mass was 22.78 g. If the shrinkage limit was 10.9, what is the density of the soil solids
Water enters a cylindrical tank through two pipes at rates of 250and 100 gal/min. If the level of water in the tank remains constant, calculate the average velocity of the flow leaving thetank through an 8-in. inside-diameter pipe.
Estimate of the point load strength index Is(50) and suggest a realistic range for the Youngs modulus E.
Now 300 kJ of heat is transferred to the refrigerant at constant pressure while 110-V source supplies current to a resistor within the cylinder for 6 min. Determine the current supplied if the final temperature is 70 degrees C.
The soil properties are Cc = 0.4, Cr = 0.1 and fsat = 18 kN/m3 for both clays, and the water table is 1 m below the soil surface. Determine the settlements when a stress of 60 kPa is applied by the building.
