Project - Grid Levelling/Contouring

Aim & objectives of the project:
To become familiar with the process of setting out a grid
To become familiar with the process of grid levelling
To learn the process of contouring (e.g. interpolation,...)
To process the grid levelling data and produce contours/a basic topographical map as part of Project 3

Project

Watch the tutorial (Week 5) under recordings in Collaborate Ultra (CU) if you have missed the live sessions. Further support/instructions will be given in the Lecture/tutorial sessions in Week 6.
Find raw ‘grid levelling' data and layout relevant to your group in slides 36-62
Find the RL value of the first point or (BM) point in Slide 35 which is needed for your level reductions

Find the image of a graph paper, size A3, (saved as pdf) under Canvas→Assignments→ Project3

1) Reduce levels using the method of rise and fall; you are going to need RL values for all grid points for later mapping and contouring purposes.

2) Do checks on computations.

3) Reduce the levels using Hight of Collimation method for double checking the RL values.

4) You may go to Officeworks and print out few graph papers in an A3 size (make 3 copies in case you need up to two additional/spare copies). A Pdf file of the graph paper is provided. Although it is not preferred, when an A3 is not possible, the graph paper may be printed in A4 and the smallest division be taken as 1mm.

5) Plot your grid into scale of 1:100 on your graph paper (rely on grid divisions rather than measuring distances using a ruler, when plotting your grid on the graph paper).

1. Two peg test results

2. Reduced levels and checks

3. Five or six labelled contour lines on your grid area on a graph paper (Size A3)

4. A legend, including the North symbol, project and student information, scale, balanced plane elevation, .... (to be included in the same A3 graph paper)

5. All workings leading to contour interval and contour values (on A4 sheet of papers for this and remainder of items)

6. Few samples of interpolations

7. Computations/working leading to the balanced plane

8. Include a cover sheet and field data (including field sketch/layout of your grid) as part of your submission

9. Individual processing/mapping and submissions are expected. A single pdf file on Canvas.

Part 2 - Balanced plane

Balanced plane is also required as part of Project 3

Balanced plane (RLb) is the mean elevation of the grid area if the grid area is flattened for construction; If we just cut the high points and fill the low points without importing and exporting soil to/from the site.

To compute the balanced plane we may rename all grid points and form a table as shown in later slides
