A study conducted at Duke University in the mid 1990's (Madan Paidhungat, Dept of Molecular Cancer Biology) investigated the cell growth with two types of yeast cell genes: wild and mutant cdc-1. It was postulated that the mutant gene inhibits the cell growth.
Using the results of a large experimental study researchers modeled the wild and mutant cell growth (measured by a number of isolated colonies as X1 and X2 respectively) under 23o Celsius temperature and controlled environment (carbon source, richness and composition of media).
The postulated distributions were X1 ∼ Poi(64) for the wild cells and X2 ∼ Poi(55) for the cdc-1 mutants.
(a) Find the probabilities of events {X1 ≤ 60} or {X2 ≥ 60}.
(b) Find x* so that the probability of {X1 > x*} is 0.25.
(c) Take two independent counts X1 and X2 from their respective distributions and find the probability that X1 + X2 exceeds 100. Hint: If X1 ∼ Poi(λ1) and X2 ∼ Poi(λ2) are independent, then X1 + X2 ∼ Poi(λ1 + λ2).
Assume that a 2005 poll of 1000 American voters found that 76% of Republicans favored ending the tax on dividend income, as did 42% of Democrats and 54% of Independents.
Draw the scatter diagram. Does it appear that x and y are related? If so, how? Test to determine whether there is evidence of a linear relationship.
What is the probability that she gets exactly 4 bull's-eyes? How many bull's-eyes do you expect her to get out of the 6 arrows and what is the standard deviation?
Once production is set up, 80 units can be produced per day. Daily demand rate for the units is 60 per day. a. What is the most economical number to produce per production run? b. How long is each production cycle?
What is the probability that a randomly selected monthly cell phone bill is more than $100?
Determine the coefficient of correlation and the coefficient of determination. please show your calculations. Interpret the results.
Is there a relationship between sales and newspaper?
A county has four major hospitals: 1) Regional Memorial; 2) General; 3) Charity; and 4) City. A multiple regression model is used to compare the time spent in the hospital after a heart by-pass surgery among the four hospitals.
Suppose B^0 and B^1(beta hut 0 and beta hut 1) are the least squares estimates of B0 and B1 of the first model. Find the estimates of B0* and B1* in terms of B^0 and B^1.
