Mr. Monteiro and Mr. Paterson are in a rock band called Mach 1 Mega Fizzix. Monteiro is playing a note at a fundamental frequency of 400.0 Hz on his 1957 Phender Stratocaster guitar with a string length of 62.5 cm. At the same time, Paterson plays a third harmonic note on an open air column trumpet and counts that he is hears 4 beats per second. When the guitar string is tightened, the beat frequency decreases.

a) Find the original tension in the string before it was tightened.

The mass per unit length of the guitar string is μ = 1.63 g/m.

b) What is the length of the trumpet air column?

The speed of sound in air in the room is vs = 345.3 m/s.
