Question: Sociologists make a profile of the attitudes of a group by asking each individual to rate his or her tolerance of people in particular categories. For example, members might be asked to assess, on a scale of 1-7, their tolerance of prostitutes, atheists, former mental patients, intellectuals, college graduates, and so on. The mean score for each category is then calculated and the categories are ranked from low to high.
