A boy ties a small stone to one end of a string and holding the other end, he whirls the stone above his head in a horizontal circle. Assume the following data. The height of the plane in which the stone is moving in a circle is 1.5 m above the ground. The length of the sting is 90 cm. The string is nearly horizontal while the stone is being whirled. The stone is moving with a speed of 3.2 m/s. The origin of your coordinate system is on the ground, directly below the center of the circle in which the stone is moving. The y axis goes through the center of the circle.
a. If the stone has a mass of 0.5 kg, find the centripetal force on the stone.
b. Find the tension in the string.
c. At some point, the string snaps. Describe the subsequent motion of the stone
d. How long does the stone take to hit the ground from the instant the string snaps?
e. Draw appropriate diagrams at each stage to explain your answers.
