Question: Find the average accelerations that occurred while stopping the two objects in Example.

Example: If the baseball stops in the catcher's glove in 0.01s, the average rate of change of its momentum is -3.69kg m s-1/0.01s = -369kgm s-2. Similarly, if a 5-kg bowling ball moving at 8m s-1 stops at the end of the lane in (perhaps) a time of 0.01s, its rate-of-change of momentum is -40/0.01 = -4000kgm s-2. These two results mean that an average force of 369kgm s-2 acted on the baseball and an average force of 4000kgm s-2 acted on the bowling ball. Catching the baseball may sting a little; trying to catch the bowling ball would really hurt!
