ENGG 0001 Engineering Science Assignment - Middle East College, Oman

Module Learning Outcomes - The student will achieve the following LOs by completing the assignment successfully

1) List the fundamentals of acoustics and identify the acoustically good buildings.

2) List the properties of ultrasonic waves and summarize its applications in engineering.

3) Demonstrate understanding of the mechanical properties of solids and liquids.

4) Explain the basics of heat and thermodynamics (Only Heat will be covered).

Assignment Objective - To assess learning emphasized on basic concepts of physics, problem solving skills and the ability to apply this knowledge in Engineering.

Assignment Tasks - Answer all questions. Show all steps of Answer.

Task 1: Determine how far you must stand from the single speaker, which is placed in open area, to receive an intensity level equal to (Z+80) dB? Consider P = (Z+10)W & I0 = 10-12 W/m2.

Task 2: Answer the following:

a. A hall of (Z+2400) m3 having a seating capacity of 600. Calculate the reverberation time, when considering the auditorium is full of audience, from the following data.

Surface

Area or number

Coefficient of absorption

Ceiling

500 m2

0.02

Walls

600 m2

0.03

Floor

500 m2

0.08

Doors

(Z+20) m2

0.03

Seats, cushion

400

0.01 sabine/chair

Seats, cane

200

0.01 sabine/chair

Consider the absorption of each member of the audience as 0.45 sabine/m and neglect the effect of absorption by the performers and their instruments.

b. What is ultrasound? Why ultrasound generates heat when it propagates in solids?

Task 3: Answer the following:

a. A fishing rope of length (Z+50) m has the diameter (Z+5) mm. When a weight of (Z+200) N is hung on the rope, the extension is (Z+50) mm. Calculate,

i. cross-sectional area of the fishing rope

ii. strain

b. A metal slab of side (Z+75) cm and thickness (Z+25) cm is subjected to a tangential force of (Z+7.5)×104 N on its narrow face while its bottom is revited to the floor. If the shearing strain is 45o, find the following:

i. Shear Stress

ii. Shear Modulus

Task 4: Answer the following:

a. A liquid chemical of (Z + 2) liters in a flexible container is carried to the bottom of the sea, where the pressure is 2.6×106 N/m2. What will be the volume there? Consider, (Bchemical = 1.0 x 109 N/m2).

b. An air bubble is allowed to rise through a long cylindrical column of a viscous liquid and travels at a steady speed (Z+2.1) cm/s. If the density of liquid is (Z+1.5) gm/cm3, and viscosity of liquid is (Z+15.6) poise, find the diameter of air bubble. Consider g = 9.81 m/s2 and neglect air density.

Task 5: Answer the following:

a. A plate (Z+0.3) m long and (??+0.1) m wide, with a thickness of (??+12) mm is made from stainless steel (k = 16 W/mK). The temperature at the bottom surface of the plate is 100oC maintained by an electrical heater supplied by 200 V and 0.25 A. In a steady-state condition, assuming that the plate is perfectly insulated on all sides except top surface, find temperature at the top surface of the plate.

b. A glass vessel with an insulating cover with a surface area of (Z+100) cm2 and (Z+15) mm thick is filled with ice at 0oC and placed in a second vessel maintained at a temperature of 100oC. Find the mass of the ice that melts per minute when the flow of heat becomes steady. Latent heat of ice = 3.3 × 105 J/kg and K for glass =1.0 W/mk.
