Question: As you listen and watch Ken Burns' Third Episode in the Jazz Documentary, Our Language, write down your thoughts to the following questions; for Group Three, initiate the responses as the Host Group.

(1) How would you compare the sound and style of performance between the three Cornet Players Joe "King" Oliver, Bix Beiderbecke, and Louis Armstrong? Don't worry, I am not asking for a Musical Analysis but, instead, your opinion on how they "blew" their instruments. You might want to do some outside research to discover what Jazz Historians have written on their different playing styles and approach to Jazz.

(2) Sidney Bechet was a master on the Clarinet and the Soprano Saxophone - what do you think was his unique approach to Jazz? Find outside research to corroborate your opinion - at least two sources.

(3) Four major and significant Band Leaders are introduced this week: Duke Ellington; Benny Goodman; Earl Hines; and Artie Shaw. Listening to each of these Band Leaders what do you think were the differences and similarities between their musical interpretations?

(4) Finally, two great Jazz and Blues Singers were shown: Bessie Smith and Ethel Waters. Comments on both, and find at least two other vocalists from the same period and discuss their voices and careers. For example, what songs were they known for singing, and which Band did they sing and appear with on a regular basis.
