1. Balance
Asymmetrical balance is achieved in a work of art when the two halves of a work, when bisected vertically, are not exactly the same but there are elements in each half that offset the visual "weight" of the other.
Find online an image of an artwork that uses asymmetrical balance, and copy it onto a blank Microsoft document. On the Microsoft document, create a vertical line through the middle of the work.
In Microsoft, circle the element on each side that is balanced against those on the opposite side.
Make sure to consider such aspects as negative spaces balanced against positive shapes.
Do you think that the work is balanced? Why, or why not?
Please answer in 3-5 sentences.
2. Unity
Find pictures of four objects that have no visual relationships: if one is long and thin, there should not be another long, thin object in the group, and so on. Be conscious of height, width, length, color, value, texture, orientation, symbolism, etc.
Once you have copied these 4 images, paste them onto another Microsoft blank document, making sure that they are not organized in a repetitive system.
Look at your collection and find as many similarities as you can.
Do you think that it is possible to avoid having some unity in a work of art? Why, or why not?
Please answer in 3-5 sentences.
