Assignment:

For your extra credit assignment, find instances of someone committing a logical fallacy.

Then submit to me the evidence. You can submit up to 7 different instances of different fallacies of someone committing a fallacy, for a possible 7% extra credit. You will receive 1 point for each fallacy instance that you submit, and you really are highlighting a fallacy and not BSing, up to 7 points.

DETAILS

1. The idea is to find an instance of someone committing a fallacy.

  • Thus, you are NOT finding illustrations of fallacies. So, you are NOT to Google a particular fallacy, find examples of it and submit that. Such a submission will NOT count.
  • Rather, look in an opinionated article, social media (which has a ton), a political speech, or somewhere else where someone is expressing their opinion and trying to argue. There you will very likely find them committing (not illustrating) a fallacy.
  • Pick fallacies from those discussed in chapter 10 of the book. book "How to Think Critically ebook with Active Learning coursewareby Kenneth Hochstetter" NOTE: Each of the 7 must be 7 DIFFERENT fallacies, from 7 different sources. Thus, you cannot submit more than one Appeal to Emotion, for example; nor can you use one article (for example) for all your fallacies.

2. What to submit.

  • If the selection you find is online, you can take a screenshot or copy the page somehow, highlight where the person is committing the fallacy, name the fallacy they are committing, save the screenshot, or copy, as a PDF or JPEG.
  • If the selection you find is a physical hard copy, you can take a photo, highlight where the person is committing the fallacy, name the fallacy, save as a PDF or JPEG.
  • If a video (e.g., YouTube), then submit the link, plus the minutes and second where the fallacy is occurring. (NOTE: You can use at most 2 videos).
