A car has the following characteristics: weight = 18000 N; cross-sectional area = 2.5 m^2, drag coefficient = 0.5; rolling friction coefficient = 0.02. The energy content of gasoline is 3.5E10^7 Joules/Liter. The efficiency of fuel use varies with engine and drivetrain operation as described below.
(a) First consider highway driving. Assume a constant velocity of 27 m/s (60.4 mph) on level ground. Under these conditions the efficiency of the engine plus auxiliaries is 30 percent and the efficiency of the drivetrain is 85 percent. What is the fuel consumption in miles/liter under these conditions? Assume the density of air = 1.2 kg/m^3.
(b) Next consider city driving. As you know from your own experience, this is mostly start-stop driving. Assume that there are three start-stop cycles per kilometer of travel (five per mile). For each cycle the car starts from rest, accelerates up to 13 m/s (29.1 mph), then instantaneously stops. Under these conditions the net engine efficiency drops to 20 percent, and the drivetrain efficiency is 80 percent. What is the fuel consumption (miles/liter) for this city driving cycle?
A tank is divided into two equal chambers by an internal diaphragm. One chamber containes methane at a pressure of 500 bar and a temperature of 20 C, and the other chamber is evacuated.
The saturation concentration for the drop is 9.20 mg/L. If, after falling for two seconds, the droplet has an oxygen concentration of 3.20 mg/L, how long must the droplet fall (from the start of the fall) to achieve a concentration of 8.20 mg/L
A river is 6m deep. The riverbed material has a saturated unit weight of 19.5kN/m3. What is the effective vertical stress 12m below the water surface. Assume the water is static and assume a datum at the water surface.
You are to assume that seawater at 77oF will be used in the tank and the curved portion forms a quarter of a circle. The tank is open to the atmosphere. The overall height, h2, is 20ft deep. The radius of the curve, R, is 5ft. The width of the..
A lab experiment of permeability test was carried out on a cylindrical sample of sand 3 inch in diameter and 4 inch in height. 9 in3 of water was collected in 2 minutes, under a head (water level difference) of 11 inch. Compute the permeability in..
