Imagine that you work in the Information Systems department of a university that has decided to switch from using Blackboard to using Moodle as its learning management system (LMS). Chapter 12 described four different system cutover strategies. Your boss has asked you to write a memo that describes how each of the four cutover strategies could be applied specifically to this scenario, including the pros and cons of each strategy (be specific about how the pros and cons relate to this particular project). In your memo, describe which of the cutover strategies you recommend for this project and why. Support your recommendation.
Chapter 12 system cut over strategies:
The first strategy is direct conversion. Direct conversion is when you determine a specific date you will stop using the old system and start using the new system. This approach is high-risk because it poses the potential for problems and errors to arise when the old system is shut off and the new system is turn on simultaneously.
The second strategy is the phase-in approach. This is a cutover strategy that involves slowly replacing components of the old system with those of the new one. This process is repeated for each application until the new system is running every application and performing as expected.
The third strategy is pilot start-up. This cutover strategy involves running the complete new system for one group of users, rather than all users. This serves as a trial run, if no problems with the pilot group arise, then you can implement the system one by one to the remaining groups.
The last strategy is parallel start-up. This involves running both the old and new systems for a period of time and closely comparing the output of the new system; any differences are reconciled. When users are comfortable that the new system is working correctly, the old system is eliminated.
