QUESTION 1:

Saint Nicholas hospital is a teaching hospital that specializes in the education and training of undergraduate and postgraduate medical professionals. The hospital offers a residency program to medical graduates that want to be surgeons. Graduates that are admitted into the surgical residency program must participate in a supervised surgery rotation program for the first two years of residency. After two years, the surgery residents are allowed to choose an area of surgical speciality which includes general surgery, cardiovascularsurgery, oral and maxillofacial surgery, orthopaedic surgery, colon and rectal surgery and ophthalmic surgery. The total time taken to complete the surgical specialization depends on the type of surgical specialization chosen.

Data was collected for four types of surgeries that were performed in the past five years. Table 1.2 shows the summary statistics for the cataract, heart bypass, lumbar laminectomy and laparoscopic appendectomy surgeries performed from 2010 to 2015. Table 1.3 shows the number of patients that will undergo the aforementioned surgeries in the month of January 2016.

Required:

a) Kindly refer to the table below and select the data based on you group number. For example, group 3 should use information about the Lumbar laminectomy surgeries to answer the subsequent questions. Avoid selecting data for another group, if you do so you risk losing all your marks due to plagiarism.

b) Use the type of surgery selected in part a) to answer this question. Show all your workings. What is the probability that the surgery is successful?

c) What type of probability did you calculate in part b)? Explain the reasoning for your answer.

d) Use the information provided in table 1.2 and table 1.3 to answer the questions that follow. Remember to use the information for the type of surgery selected in part a) of this question. For example, group 2 will be using data for heart bypass surgeries only.

i) Use Excel's Binomdist function to prepare a binomial probability distribution for the number of patients whose surgery was a successful in January 2016.
(Helpful hint: To calculate the binomial probabilities you need to use Excel's probability mass function. So type FALSE in the cumulative (i.e. the last) part of the formula).

ii) What is the probability that no surgery will be successful in January 2016?

iii) What is the probability that no more than one surgery is successful in January 2016?

iv) Find the mean, variance and the standard deviation of number of successful surgeries in January 2016.

v) Interpret the results calculated in part d)(iv) of this question

QUESTION 2:

Yummy Treats Limited is a small company with eighty employees. The human resource manager has provided you with the annual salaries of some of the company's employees.

Refer to the Excel spreadsheet titled Yummy and select data based on your group number.

Required:

a) Use the Excel MIN and MAX function to find the lowest and highest salaries respectively.

b) Find and interpret the range of the employees' salaries.

c) Use the Excel COUNT function to find the number of employees that were sampled

d) Use the Excel QUARTILE function to find the first, second and third quartiles.

e) Explain what the three values computed in part d) mean.

f) Find and interpret the interquartile range for this sample

g) Use the Excel AVERAGE function to find the mean salary for the sampled employees.

h) Use the Excel PERCENTILE function to find the 85th percentile. Explain the meaning of the value calculated

i) Use Excel to find the 98% confidence interval for the average number of hours Australian children spend watching television. Show all your workings in Excel by filling out the table provided confidence intervalspreadsheet.

j) State and interpret the confidence interval estimated in part (a) of this question

k) What is the width of the confidence interval you estimated in part (a)?
