Find and analyze a substantive sample of technical writing, then report your findings in an essay of at least 300 words. An appropriate sample document would be a minimum of several pages long and would have sufficient complexity and sophistication to make it suitable for a specialized audience. Although instructions are a very common type of technical writing, you will not be permitted to use the instruction manual for any consumer appliance (automobile, cell phone, DVD player, VCR, dishwasher, etc.) as your sample because these documents typically lack the required complexity and sophistication. Rather, you should look to less common but more interesting examples such as engineering reports, papers published in scholarly journals, and textbooks.
Your analysis should begin by identifying the type of technical writing that the sample contains (instructions, process description, correspondence, recommendation report, and so on). You may have to read ahead in your text to learn about the various types of technical documents in order to make a proper identification.
Next, your analysis should address the three essential features of technical writing: audience, information, and purpose. Who is the intended audience for each document? What information is being conveyed to that audience? For what purpose is it being conveyed?
Finally, your analysis should evaluate the quality of each document. Does the document make clear its intended audience and purpose? How successfully does it meet the needs of its intended audience? Is the information contained in it complete and understandable? Are graphics used where appropriate to clarify complex material and concepts? Is the document well-organized and easy to access for members of the intended audience? Is the document attractive and professional in its appearance?
