You're managing an online ebay hobby store that sells these little red Pomodoro timers (among other knick-knacks).
You only sell a couple a week, and you generally order them from a wholesale supplier in China, one box at a time, each box containing 100 timers. You then re-pack them and fulfill the orders locally until they're sold.
However you made a mistake when you placed your last order. Instead of ordering 100, you accidentally added two extra zeros when confirming the order, and you now have a pallet of 10,000 on its way.
You've only just realised your mistake, and the shipment is arriving at your door in three days.
The facts you have to deal with:
- You don't have room to store the pallet. Your neighbor has kindly offered you their garage to store the pallet on the day it arrives, but they need the garage back the next day
- The cost price (what you pay) to buy the timers and get them to your door is US$1.00/widget (i.e. you're liable for US$10,000 for this order)
- You have to pay the full invoice for the order 20 business days after delivery
- You only have US$1,000 in the bank, and don't have any other income
The supplier does accept returns and issue refunds, but you have to cover the return freight, which is US$1,500
The buck stops with you. Share some ideas on how you might address this sticky situation?
