A. Non-floating, submerged block
1. The purpose of this part of the experiment is to measure the buoyant force acting on a submerged (non-floating) "brick block" and to find a relationship with the water displaced by the block.
2. Use the scale to determine the weight of the brick block out of water.
3. Note the exact water level reading in the container of water and record the reading below.
4. Now, submerse the brick block in the water and place it on the scale under water. The reading on the scale will be the "apparent weight" of the block. What does the scale read when weighing the submerged block?
5. Note the new water level reading in the container of water and record the reading below.
6. The water causes a buoyant force that reduces the apparent weight (i.e., the scale reading) of the block. The buoyant force is the difference between the scale readings out of and in the water. Determine the buoyant force by taking the difference between these two readings.
7. Find the volume of the water displaced by the submerged block by measuring the difference in water level with the block submerged and with the block completely out of the water.
8. Compute the weight of water displaced by the block. (Remember: 1 L of water has a mass of 1 kg.)
9. How does the buoyant force (difference in scale readings) on the submerged block compare with the weight of the water displaced? (more, less, or about the same)
10. The buoyant force should be EQUAL to the weight of water displaced. This is the main point of this lab!
11. Determine the density of the block. The density is its mass divided by its volume. The units should be kg/m3. (1 L = 1×10-3 3)
12. Is the density more or less than that of water (1000 kg/m3)? Should the block sink or float if placed in water?
