Introduction to Civil and Environmental Engineering Drawing Assignment -
You are to find a real Civil Engineering structure (not one found on the Internet) that is external, approximately rectilinear and safe and legal to gain access to - a structure that is inside a building is not to be chosen. Please take care of your safety and use proper tools for measurement.
Some examples of Civil Engineering structures are small residential buildings (one or two storey houses), retaining walls, small bridges, drainage pits, storage rooms, etc. Large structures like UTS Tower Building 1 or the Sydney Harbour Bridge are not required. Please note that items of furniture, notice-boards or brick walls two or three courses high, are not Civil Engineering structures.
You are to produce engineering sketches of this structure in orthographic projection. Hand drawing only, no CAD drawing is permitted.
What is to be submitted -
1. An FEIT standard assignment cover sheet, with the statement of originality signed by you. The cover sheet can be found on UTS Online.
2. A set of clear photographs of the structure.
3. A statement giving the location of the structure and what you believe its purpose is. There needs to be sufficient detail to uniquely define the structure's single location.
4. On A4 sheet(s) a plan view and at least two elevations so that the structure is reasonably represented in your scaled engineering sketches. Each plan and elevation is to be titled appropriately. Plan view first, then elevations. Please address the following points in your drawing:
A Northpoint, must be shown on the plan view only. Please note that the Northpoint actually points in the direction of (Grid) North with respect to your structure on your plan view on your drawing. Orient your plan horizontally across the sheet so that your Northpoint points above the horizontal on the sheet.
Relevant dimensions of the structure, in mm, are to be shown once but not repeated. Relevant dimensions and overall dimensions are, possibly, the dimensions of any significant element of the structure. Include the overall plan dimensions on the plan that you present first before the elevations.
Your measurement for dimensions should be reasonably accurate.
The submitted sketches are to be in pencil and be the original. Photocopied sheets of the sketch will not be acceptable and will not be marked.
Each sheet that you use for your drawings, as a minimum, should have a title, your name, date and sheet number.
The scale is to be appropriate t reasonably use the available space on the A4 sheet - do not try to squeeze plan, elevations and section(s) onto a single sheet at too small a scale. The scale used is to be shown on each sheet.
From AS1100.101, C 5.4.1, appropriate scales for Civil Engineering drawings are:
1:2, 1:20, 1:200,
1:5, 1:50, 1:500,
1:10, 1:100, 1:1000.
1:2.5, 1:25, 1:250.
Please use the same scale for your plan, elevations and, if any, your section(s).
The professional presentation (layout and tidiness) of your submission will be considered as part of the assessment. Stapled top upper left corner, no plastic sleeve.
