Descriptive/Sampling Project -
For this project you will determine a question that you are interested in that can be answered with one of the three quantitative variables I will give you in Canvas: Perfect Temperature, Number of Facebook Friends, or Number of Countries Visited. Once you have that question you will take a sample of size thirty from the appropriate column and find the mean, median, standard deviation as well as creating a boxplot, frequency distribution, and histogram (corresponding to your histogram). Then you will write a paper, in some standard formal format and turn it in by 11:59 pm on June 1. You will be graded on the four QR objectives as listed below.
I. Formulate a question and explain the decision process behind the choices made.
Make sure you explain why you picked the question you did, in particular why you found it interesting and what use it could be and to whom (other than yourself). What do you think the answer will be? Why?
II. Use statistical methods to gather and analyze data.
Find a random sample and explain how you got it. Find a boxplot, five number summary, mean, standard deviation, frequency distribution and a histogram corresponding to the frequency distribution. Explain how you decided on the number of classes and how you found the classes you used. Look at the histogram and boxplot and write a few sentences explaining why you think the population might or might not be normally distributed. Then come up with an answer to your question using the statistics and plots.
III. Determine the reasonableness of the answer and explain the limitations of your method.
Does the answer the statistics suggest seem reasonable to you? Why or why not? What might make you incorrect? Explain. Think about what might have gone wrong even if you did the statistics correctly.
IV. Interpret your results in a context appropriate for a broader audience.
Go back to your original problem and to whom it might be interesting. Write a conclusion that explains to this person or organization what you found. Do not use any statistical terms.
