Topic: Learning about body mechanics and posture

TASK :

  1. Find a quiet place where you can relax for a few moments. It doesn't have to be silent, aim for new distraction.
  2. Stand up straight, feet hip width apart & face forward. Relax your neck & shoulders with your hands at your side.
  3. Make a small hallow in your lower back by tucking the tailbone in & tilting your pelvic bone slightly forward. This is done by tightening the muscles of the buttocks & thus, rotating postion. Be careful not to arch too much.
  4. Pull the shoulders back and lift your chest.
  5. Lift your chin until it is level & relax your jaw and mouth
  6. Notice how it feels to stand in this position. Does your body tell you anything through how it feels? Stand there for 2-3 mins or until you notice anything feeling different. It becomes challenging to hold good posture for a length of time. Our body's become tired & a little lazy & want to relax in ways that may not be good for our muscular-skeletal system.
  7. This is proper posture! With practice, it will become easier over time
  8. Being aware of your posture is key. To practice, try the chin tuck: ( a) Sit/stand with proper posture. (b) Gently, pull your chin in a comfortable postion; hold for a few seconds & repeat for 3 reps.
  9. Practice a shoulder squeeze, (a) Sit/stand with proper posture(b) bring your elbows to the side & behind you slightly, squeeze the shoulder blades as if to get them togethet; hold for a few seconds & repeat for 3 reps.

REFLECT:

  • After completing your tasks, reflect on what you noticed. How did proper posture feel to you? Did you have to release it quickly, or were you able to maintain the posture for a few minutes easily?
  • What happens to you personally in your day that could contribute to poor posture? What could you do to change this for the betterment of your body? This could be as simple as the way you adjust your seatbelt or the chair that you use.
  • What have you learned & what are your take-aways?
