For this assessment, you are asked to select ONE First Nation from the website  Four Directions Teachings and listen/view the medicine wheel stories provided by that Nation. The links below provide both the interactive/video-based version of the website and the web-based version with transcripts.

You will then need to answer the following questions about the Nation you profiled on the website (Ojibwe, Cree, Mi'kmaq, Blackfoot, Mohawk). It is ok to answer the questions in Q & A paragraph format. It is ok to leave the questions above the paragraph response when you submit your work for Part 1.

2. What is the creation story you have learned from the website for this Nation, please summarize it in your ownn worrds (approx. 25O wordss)

3. Each Nation shared a variety of teachings, ceremonies and socials. For question two you are asked to summarize ONE of the key teachings, ceremonies, or socials provided about that Nation in your own worrds. In your summary you must include the following:

  • Provide a title for the teaching, ceremony or social
  • Provide a short summary of the teaching, ceremony or social (15O words)

4. Explain why you choose this teaching, ceremony or social to discuss. Consider what meaning might it have for you or why you selected it from all the available options.

Part 2: Indigenous Artwork

For part two of this assignment, you are asked to find a piece of artwork by an Indigenous artist from the Nation you have learned about in Part 1 of this assessment (Ojibwe, Cree, Mi'kmaq, Blackfoot, Mohawk). The artwork must reflect a moral principle or value from one of the teachings in the Four Directions video you profiled about that Nation (it can reflect any teaching not just the teaching you discussed in Part 1 of this assessment). Keep in mind artwork can take a variety of formats from classical art like painting, to modern art, song, dance, sculpture, and even craft life beading, basket weaving and pottery. Once you have located the piece of artwork you are asked to answer all of the following questions in a Q&A paragraph format. It is ok to leave the questions above the paragraph response when you submit your work for Part 2.

Questions:

  1. What is the artist's name, what Nation are they from, what is the title of the artwork, and why did you pick this artwork?
  2. How does the artwork/image reflect a moral principle or value from within the teaching you learned on the Four Direction Website?
  3. How are the artwork and its message similar to or different from artwork that shows ethical, moral, spiritual, ceremonial, cultural, or religious messages or teachings you are familiar within your own culture? (Consider fairy tales, religion, laws, spirituality etc. when answering this question)
  4. Please include one image of the artwork with your submission with proper citations and references. Below the image briefly describe the image and any important details that you feel should be noted by a viewer and why.
