Search for some reporting on the current state of the coronavirus pandemic in the U.S. that fits one of the themes
- health & disease: the disease itself, vaccines as medicine or research on it
- health care coverage or
- healthcare policy.
The story can be local or national, but it should address some aspect of a policy being advanced by some level of government, (city/state/federal) whether it's the treatments available or maybe reviving mask mandates given the new variant or insurance for treatment or any number of other issues.
When you find a topic that interests you, find a few versions from different news outlets and examine the reporting for bias, for good practices on health information and for clear explanations on the specifics it covers.
In particular, take a close look at the sources mentioned - is the story citing credible sources?
Are the sources political when they should be medical?
Are they tied at all to the health care industry? Is that mentioned in the stories they're cited in? (For instance, former FDA Commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb gets a lot of media, he's also a board member of Pfizer.)
Could that reflect a bias that isn't immediately apparent?
If you're looking a policy issue, is everyone a known partisan or are there neutral voices in there?
