Find a business research article that used secondary data and describe the source of the secondary data used. Describe why you chose the source you did. Do you believe this to be the best secondary source available? Why or why not?

- Suppose you are the research director for your state's tourism bureau. Begin by assessing your state's information needs.

What information will you collect in a survey from tourists who visit your state?

What do you think is the best way to collect the information (personal surveys, online surveys, etc.) and why? How effective would it be to conduct a survey at a local mall? Explain your rationale.

What other avenues for conducting surveys will you explore and why?

Next, conduct an Internet search on information needs of a neighboring state. How might a survey you create for that state be different from one you create for your home state?

Organizations use a variety of communication techniques not available in the past. New communication technologies include e-mail, voice mail, fax machines, and cell phones. While these technologies greatly enhance the speed of communication, they cannot convey the nonverbal cues that make up a significant portion of the message.

- How have communication technologies changed the way people within organizations communicate?

- What are the benefits and challenges associated with using contemporary communication technologies?

Interpersonal communication is important for the quality of working relationships in organizations. Managers who are sensitive and responsive when communicating with employees encourage the development of trusting, loyal, relationships.

Address the following questions.

- Who is the best communicator you know? Why do you consider that person to be so? Who is the best listener you have ever known? Describe what that person does that makes him or her so good at listening.

- What methods have these individuals used in overcoming barriers to communication that are physical? Status based? Cultural? Linguistic?

- How might the characteristics of communication you identified in these individuals be used in the supervisor-subordinate relationship?
