From the Films on Demand Database, select "All titles" in Anthropology and then select "Language, Folklore, & the Arts". From this list, select and view two videos. Your choices in videos should depict different artistic forms (e.g. visual, auditory, kinesthetic (e.g. dance) , etc.) and should detail the art of specific cultures; not all films in this list would be appropriate for this assignment (e.g. TED talks, the History of Language series, Is It Real series, and How Art Made the World series, etc.). Complete the worksheet for each film viewed.

Film 1: Title:

  1. Describe the culture depicted in the film. This should include their name and location along with a description of their beliefs and values, subsistence, economics, political organization, family and kinship, marriage, social system (stratification/egalitarian), gender roles, etc. It would be appropriate to research this culture to supplement your description.
  2. Describe the forms of art depicted in the film. Note that multiple forms will likely be depicted and may include visual (e.g. painting, sculpture, architecture, landscaping, body decoration, etc.), auditory (e.g. music, songs, stories, poetry, etc.), kinesthetic (e.g. dance, movement, etc.). These categories are not inclusive nor are they mutually exclusive
  3. Identify the functions of art in political, ritual, and social contexts. These might include socializing children into their culture, teaching traditions and history, educating, providing a sense of social identity/unity, rallying, bonding, worshiping, entertaining, etc.

  2. Describe the forms of art depicted in the film.
  3. Identify the functions of art in political, ritual, and social contexts.
