Arrival is a movie. This film explores the importance of language and syntax. Twelve alien ships appear around the world in the plot.

A United States Army officer recruits linguist Louise Banks and physicist Ian Donnelly to find out why the aliens have come.

In Montana, Banks and Donnelly make contact with two seven-limbed aliens, whom they call "heptapods," and begin investigating their language written in complicated circular symbols. As Banks studies the language, she begins to have visions of a girl who appears to be her daughter.

When Banks is able to establish enough shared vocabulary, he translates a message in a completely different way than the Chinese linguist. The climax and resolution of the film depend on the syntax.
