Overview: In order to hone both your film analysis skills and your engagement with key concepts, such as flashback, narrative etc. You will conduct a critical response to a pre-selected scene or sequence from each week's film. (Bullet Train 2022, Jurassic Park 1993 and Rear Window 1954).

These close readings are also meant to help you prepare for the two longer analysis papers you will write.

Step 1: While watching the pre-selected scene included below, & carefully consider the different concepts we've discussed that you find especially fascinating, controversial, provocative, or strange. Take notes that will you can then use as you draft your close reading.

Step 2: In order to join the film criticism conversation, you will need to write an interpretive claim that showcases the main point of your analysis.

An interpretive claim requires these features:

  1. Makes an argument
  2. Is open to interpretation
  3. Suggests scope and structure of your analysis

To demonstrate your engagement with the course and its material, make sure your interpretive claim also includes these features:

  1. Focuses only on the film at assigned that week
  2. Fixates on key concepts from the current week's readings

Examples:

  1. Richard Kelly's Donnie Darko montage in which Donnie's fate is revealed uses slow motion and desaturation in order to intensify the feelings of melancholy and desolation at the film's conclusion.
  2. In this scene from The Limey, the filmmakers use a series of dissolves and flashbacks to make a visual association between the protagonist, Wilson, and the object of his anger, Terry Valentine, which allow the viewer to connect Wilson and Valentine and establish the role that they both fulfilled in Jenny's life.
  3. In The Witch, Robert Eggers uses symmetry and natural lighting to evoke the monstrous-feminine, which is fully realized in the final scene.

Formative:

Interpretive Claim (your actual interpretive claim, not the words "interpretive claim")

Your response.

Writing a strong interpretive claim is the hardest part of this assignment. After you have that squared away, write a one-page analysis that defends your claim through specific film and textual evidence.
