A government official estimates that the mean time required to fill out the long form of the United States Census follows a distribution which is approximately normal with mean 36 minutes. A random sample of 16 people who were given the long form took a sample mean time x-bar = 40 minutes with sample standard deviation s = 10 minutes.
Decide if you want to run a lower-tail test, a two-tail test, or an upper-tail test to determine if the average time is longer than 36 minutes.
You choose:
Select one:
a. lower-tail testb. two-tail testc. upper-tail test
d. perform your chosen test from the previous question and answer the following questions:
(a) Find the critical value of the t-statistic with a 10% level of significance.
(b) Find the t-test statistic from the sample data
(c) Find the p-value
What do you conclude?
Select one: a. No, it is not longer. b. Yes, it is longer. c. Results are invalid due to the t-stat. d. Results are invalid due to the small sample size.
