Case study

A four-month-old female had suffered from coughing for more than 2 weeks. Her mother brought her to the hospital ER after the child had spasms (paroxysms) of coughing spells that ended with vomiting. The child's skin also turned slightly blue. Upon examination, conjunctival hemorrhages and facial petechiae were also noted. A chest X-ray did not reveal any pulmonary infiltrates. A culture was made from posterior nasopharyngeal sections. The resulting growth of pathogen revealed it to have no flagella, aerobic with the ability to produce filamentous hemaglutinin and tracheal cytotoxin. The mother was questioned about the child's vaccination schedule.
