Question

A 35-year-old female presents to her general practitioner (GP) with a fever and erythematous ears with auricular chondritis. She also complains of carpal and metacarpal arthralgia. She reported tinnitus and vertigo the previous day. Her medical history includes celiac disease, hypertension, and previous mild manifestations of auricle and nasal cartilage inflammation. A physical exam shows ocular signs of scleritis, keratitis, and uveitis; although the patient denied eye discomfort. Observation with an otoscope shows external auditory canal stenosis. The patient meets the criteria for relapsing polychondritis, an autoimmune disease that targets cartilage. Relapsing refers to periodic flare ups. A biopsy of the auricular cartilage is taken to confirm the diagnosis. The patient is put on glucocorticoid therapy to treat the inflammation.
