Question: A special class of alkynes are molecules called ene-diynes feature a ring containing an alkene between two alkyne groups ("diyne"). These compounds are called calicheamicins and are very aggressive antitumor drugs. The ene-diyne subunit is sometimes referred to as a "warhead" because it is generating highly reactive radical intermediates that attack DNA within the cancerous tumor (Maiese et.al, 1989).
