An individual enters the same First National Bank (a federal financial institution) branch on October 5th at 10:00am, 11:00am and 12:30 pm. On all three occasions, the individual wants to deposit $7,000.00 into a newly established account. The bank security manager suspects that the individual is trying to "structure" the deposits and decides to file a Suspicious Activity Report (SAR) with FinCEN. Two days later, an FBI Agent sees the SAR and identifies the individual as a subject of one of his fraud investigations. The FBI Agent goes to the First National Bank and asks the bank security manager for the documentation supporting the filing of the SAR. The bank security manager may only provide such supporting documents if the FBI Agent produces a subpoena for the documents.
