Quesetion: There are many ways to define family, but when we look at it from a theoretical standpoint, there are three main perspectives that we can observe and apply. The first theory discussed, and the most commonly applied theory, is the Family Systems Model. This model aims to view the family system as a whole. By looking at the family as individual pieces, you do not get a complete comprehensive understanding of that family (Hanson & Lynch, 2013, p.46).
All members of a family are interconnected and together, they are able to affect and be affected by their environment. This aspect leads into the second theory discussed, which is the Bioecological Model. This model is based on Bronfenbrenner''s Ecological framework (1979), explaining that families are only one part of an overall system (Hanson & Lynch, 2013, p.50).
Six key points that this theory follows are; families are biologically and socially connected, they depend on environment to survive, socially dependent upon others, human life is both a resource and constraint, interactions are spatially organized, and interactions are observable at both the population and individual levels. The last theory is Adjustment and Adaptation Model for Coping with Stress. This model combines the core aspects of the Family Systems model and Bioecological model by acknowledging that these variables affect how a family reacts to stress (Hanson & Lynch, 2013, p.54).
This model is sketched out in the ABCX model. When this model is broken down, A represents the stressors of the family, B are the resources pertaining to that stressor, C are the families interpretation of the stressor, and X is in the middle representing how the family responds.
Overall, in the field of developmental disabilities, I believe that utilizing this model will be the most beneficial because it allows you to understand the families coping skills, their understandings, and you are able to provide valuable resources based on their needs.
