Topic: Fall prevention strategies in hospitals
The purpose of this assignment is to provide students with an opportunity to explore and apply the concept of evidence-informed practice. Students will conduct a search of a health sciences database (such as CINAHL) to locate a research study relevant to an issue in their current clinical practice context. Students are asked to describe the key components of this study and determine how or if the study's findings apply to the nursing practice in their clinical settings. This is followed by a reflection on the findings of the study apply to their practice.
Instruction:
Please read and follow the instructions closely.
- Paper length is to be a maximum of 1500 words. Marks will be deducted for word counts that exceed this maximum.
- Submit the assignment in WORD format (NOT PDF) using APA via the D2L Dropbox.
- Include a minimum of 5 references in addition to that of your chosen study. Note the following about references:
- Personal communications are NOT considered one of the 5 references and according to APA, are not included in the reference list.
- Hospital policies and similar documents used as evidence are considered references and should be included in your reference list.
Research Article Selection
Your article must be scientific and peer reviewed (refer to appendix B), written within the past 5 years and be within the scope of your level 1 practice as well as being written by or about nurses.
Introduction
Describes the purpose of this assignment.
• Defines evidence-informed practice and discuss why it is important to professional nursing practice. (Remember to use appropriate references and citations to support your statements.)
• Briefly introduces and references the research study you have chosen and explain why you have selected it (e.g. personal interest? a common issue in clinical? relates to a patient care situation you came across?)
• Introduces the content you will cover and explains how your paper will be structured
Description
Explains the underlying issue of your chosen study. (What is being researched about this topic? What is the general understanding about the topic based on the present research either presented by the authors or from your basic literature search? What issue or problem in practice motivated the authors to conduct this research? Why was this study necessary? (Use several references to support your answer).
Briefly describe the following components of the study: • The research question/hypothesis/goal/aim (What one question did the author(s) seek to answer?) • The setting (Consider the physical location and/or clinical context.) • The sample (Who were the participants in the study? How were they selected?) • Methodology (How was the study conducted? What did the authors do?) Only include information that makes sense to you. Avoid in-depth discussion of statistical analyses, etc. • Ethical considerations (What processes did the authors undergo to ensure the research was done ethically i.e. was an ethical review board consulted?) • Limitations (What limitations did the authors identify? What, if any limitations of the study did you identify?)
In your own words, summarize the findings of the study. Include a minimum of 4 findings. If the authors did not record 4 findings, expand on the most important findings. Tips i) what were the research questions the authors aimed to answer ii) as you write this section, consider how the findings you are writing were validated or invalidated in your clinical setting
Bridge study to your clinical setting
In order for this paper to reflect a study that is within the scope of practice for Level 1 students, explain how this study relates to your clinical placement. For example, explain how the patients in this study are similar to the ones you have cared for so far this term; do the nurses in the study work in a similar clinical setting as your clinical placement, such as a medical ward?
**Please note the SURGICAL or CRITICAL CARE settings are NOT considered within your scope and can not be related to your practice setting**
Application
Take the findings of your study and determine if they are or are not being used in your clinical setting. Make sure you describe in detail how this evidence is linked back to the study. Your answers must be validated or invalidated using 2 separate and distinct pieces of evidence from 2 different sources. Evidence #1: Person from your clinical setting (Total 3 marks) a) Who is this person? Full first name and last name initial is acceptable and include this person's title, such as registered nurse, occupational therapist, etc. Examples of acceptable people: RNs, LPNs, nurse educators, managers, patient care coordinators / clinical nurse leaders, non nursing health care providers = physiotherapist, occupational therapist, pharmacist, dietitian, speech language pathologist, physician, etc. **The following are NOT acceptable for this assignment: BCIT instructors, patients / family members, care aides, unit clerks, housekeepers / porters / dietary staff, nursing students** b) Provide detailed description of the answers to the questions you asked them in relation to your study. Ensure you link their answers back to your study's findings Evidence #2: Non-person (Total 3 marks) a) Examples: BCIT approved textbooks or resources that you use to prepare for clinical or documents from the health authority, e.g. protocols, policies, clinical decision support tools, procedures, order sets, clinical pathways, etc. Name this document whether it is a textbook or a health authority's document and be sure you reference it on the Reference list b) Provide a detailed description of how this resource is related to your study's findings
Reflection
Discuss ways in which YOU could apply the findings of your chosen study to your current or future nursing practice. a) How could YOU take action to promote the use of these findings in your nursing practice? b) How do you see yourself using these findings once you begin practicing as a registered nurse? c) Findings are currently implemented in clinical setting: If the findings are already implemented, how could practice be improved in your clinical setting? OR Findings are not currently implemented in clinical setting: What barriers might exist with the implementation of these new practices in your clinical setting? OR Findings are partially implemented in clinical setting: Answer both of the questions above d) What further research ideas did the author(s) suggest? Do you have any further questions or suggestions for further research in this area?
Conclusion
Summarize and "tie together" the content of your paper, focusing on the key points you have made. Tip: what was the purpose of the assignment
